We built our global food sourcing network on strong relationships

Since our company was founded in 1961, we’ve grown from a single, Vancouver-based office, to a female-led team with offices in British Columbia and California. Our owners, Nicole North and Brittany Sardine, worked their way up in this industry – from the fields to the front office. They’ve inspected produce at dawn as it’s being loaded into trucks, nurtured decades-long relationships with growers and – over individual careers spanning more than 20 years – seen what works in the industry, and where change is required.

Our global supply chain is built on strong, working relationships and trust. Our relationships with our growers, processors, cold storage and transportation facilities, allow us to create fair and honest solutions that benefit everyone – and a streamlined, end-to-end experience for our customers.

Some of our deepest connections are with the farm families who supply us year-after-year. It’s no exaggeration to say that many of those relationships extend all the way back to our beginnings. Our growers are our valued partners and we treat them as such, with fair pricing, regular visits to their fields, and by working together to resolve any issues.

Our history with local growers goes back decades

At S.H. Blackwell, we believe in supporting local whenever we can, from local teams and causes where we live and work, to local farmers – in fact, our relationships with berry growers in BC stretch back decades. Our support also extends to the people our growers employ; we hold them accountable for providing fair wages and adequate working conditions in the communities where we source our food.

In the event that we have excess frozen produce, we make sure that it, too, supports communities. We ensure that it doesn’t go to waste by donating it to Fraser Valley Gleaners, a non-profit organization that dehydrates food and turns it into soup mix to feed hungry people all over the world.
